June 2023

 Due to inclement weather our June potluck lunch was held on the 3rd floor of the Greenwood Community Centre. The meeting was well attended and as usual the food was delicious.

We have been invited to Lesley Sedore's home on the Black River in the Lake Simcoe area for a paddle in her 13 man canoe.

The President's Challenge this year was to make an item that reflects one's cultural background. The following photos are of this year's items.


Usha brought her parents' wedding saris to reflect her Indian heritage. The saris were given to Usha and her sister by their parents. Usha is taking them to England for a family gathering.


Alice crocheted an Irish lace patterned cowl to reflect her Irish heritage.






Carol Ann brought a tartan bear, sheep blanket and wool blanket to relect her Scottish heritage.


Christine made a flat cap to reflect her English/Irish/Scottish heritage.

Janet knit a twill cardigan and wove a Shetland/merino houndstooth scarf to reflect her British heritage.



Gayle wove prayer shawls for her grandchildren to reflect her Jewish heritage. Silk for two boys and synthetic for a girl. Hebrew name is embroidered on collar and the shawls are given at age 13 at a bar mitzvah(boy) and a bat mitzvah (girl).




Rosemary needle felted a piece to reflect her English/Scottish/ Greek heritage in a rose design.



Gini knitted a sontag colonial style vest from her handspun yarn to reflect her English/American heritage.


Alexa knit an Aran Celtic cable pattern scarf and wore Irish earrings to reflect her Irish/Scottish heritage.


Eleanor brought in some cross stitch Christmas tree decorations that she made to reflect her German/Prussian/Scottish heritage.



Dini brought in a doll with knit pajamas by her mother, samples of hand sewing, knitting and crochet made by her between the ages of 7-10. Also to reflect her Dutch heritage Dini brought in Poesie album which contains poems by friend and family.

Annie wove a throw using the colours from the Penman tartan which was her mother's maiden name to reflect her Scottish heritage.
